Merritt Island is located in the Intercoastal Waterway flanked by the Indian and Banana River. Cape Canaveral is a Barrier Island on the Atlantic ocean; only about 2 miles of Intercoastal water seperate the two. As both towns are on the water, they both have a very beachy feel and demeanor to them. Cape Canaveral has quite a few hotels and attracts quite alot of tourism including the cruise ship port.

On Merritt Island you can go to Kelly Park or the Ulumay Wildlife Sanctuary and of course anything you want to do on the Intercoastal; paddle boarding, windsurfing, fishing, boating, and swimming. You can also take a space coast river tour and you are just minutes away from the Kennedy Space Center. Play golf at the Savannahs Golf Club. You can also go skateboarding at the Paradise Funplex as well as putt putt golf, batting cages, and amusement games. In Cape Canaveral you can go to the beaches anywhere, but Jetty Park is really nice. You can hit the Cocoa Beach Pier and go fishing, get a drink, or grab a meal. You can spend an hour or two inside the World Famous Ron Jon's Surf Shop and there are plenty of resteraunts all along A1A. You can also ride go carts and play putt putt golf at the Jungle Village

Traffic congestion in Merritt Island and Caper Canaveral is only on State Road 520, 528, and A1A. It also only happens a little during rush hour and on the weekends with all the beach goers for all over central florida going to the beaches. The other major roads; Courtenay Parkway, Banana River Drive, and Tropical Trail keep fairly congestion free.
